ORGANIZING

At Abortion Action Missouri, we know that winning stigma free abortion access is going to take all of us.

The primary culprit for bans on abortion in our state are a small group of politicians who are obsessed with their own power and control at the expense of our lives, bodies, and futures. In order to advance their own ambition, these politicians worked to ban abortion for decades.

Even though politicians tried to take away the legal right to abortion, we’re not letting them take our freedom or our power.

We know that when people take action together, we can overcome the politicians who try to control us and govern our state on our terms.

  • We build our movement by talking to our neighbors, listening to the needs and dreams of our community, and educating people on abortion
  • We bring people together to elect politicians at the local, state and federal level
  • We show up and take action to hold politicians accountable and pass laws on our terms

clinic support

For almost 40 years, Abortion Action Missouri has facilitated the only Clinic Escort program in the St. Louis metro region to support direct patient access to essential abortion care.

Our volunteer clinic escorts provide those walking into clinics, whether patients, companions or staff, with a physical sense of security and a calming presence from the moment they exit their vehicle until they are safely in the clinic.

Currently, AAM provides clinic escorts to two St. Louis-area clinics. Escorts occasionally have the opportunity to volunteer for AAMO as crowd control at local actions as well.

To become an AAM Clinic Escort, interested volunteers must attend two virtual one-hour sessions: An Information session and a Logistics Session. Information sessions are held monthly and Logistics sessions are held every other month.

Storytelling

Our stories are the most powerful tool we have to fight abortion stigma, change minds, and build power across our state.

From sharing their personal abortion stories in the media or at rallies, testifying before the Missouri legislature on experiences accessing birth control or relying on Medicaid, to engaging lawmakers one-on one to educate them on their experiences as community birth workers and doulas, Abortion Action Missouri storytellers show up.

Abortion Action Missouri hosts monthly trainings for individuals to learn the art of storytelling, workshop together or engage one-on-one with our team to practice your story.

Reproductive Justice Advisory Committee

A space specifically for Black and brown community members to come together and discuss topics and issues facing Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC)communities

The Reproductive Justice Advisory Committee provides advice and recommendations to Abortion Action Missouri on how we can better address issues impacting BIPOC communities across Missouri.

In 2022, the Reproductive Justice Advisory Committee was responsible for drafting and passing the St. Louis Reproductive Equity Fund! We sat with Black mothers everywhere and asked them what they needed from health care systems in Missouri. We took that feedback and got our local government to allocate $1.5 million for doula support!

While Abortion Action Missouri is not a Reproductive Justice organization, we strive to utilize the Reproductive Justice framework – supporting the human right to have children, to not have children, and to parent the children we have in safe and sustainable communities.

Your participation is crucial to the success of this meeting, and we encourage you to bring your thoughts, concerns, and suggestions to the table.

SEXUAL EDUCATION

Since 2019, Abortion Action Missouri’s Students at the Front for Sex Education Fellowship has developed local high school students as sex education leaders in their schools and beyond.

The program instills principles of grassroots organizing, equipping these young leaders with the tools necessary to address disparities in sex education curriculums and programs regionally, and inspiring them to build power in their communities to make change.

The Students at the Front for Sex Education Organizing Committee meet twice monthly in the summer months and is a space for high school students to organize their own peers to show up for this issue.

Additionally they work together to plan and implement direct action to improve sexual education in the St. Louis region.

In 2022, ABORTION ACTION Missouri Foundation released a groundbreaking report on the state of sex education in Missouri. Read it below!
